COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact (within about 6 feet) for a prolonged period. Spread happens when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks and droplets from their mouth or nose are launched into the air and land in the mouths or noses of people around, thereby inhaled into the lungs. 

Tips for Social Distancing :

Limiting close face-to-face contact with others is the best way to reduce the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). To practice social or physical distancing, wear a mask and stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from other people who are not from your household in both indoor and outdoor spaces.

  • Know Before You Go: Before going out, know and follow the guidance from local public health authorities where you live.
  • Prepare for Transportation: Consider safe travelling options when running errands or commuting to and from work. Wear a mask and maintain 6 feet distance when using public transport. 
  • When Running Errands: If possible, use drive-thru, pick-up, or delivery services to limit face-to-face contact with others. Visit stores for household essentials in person only when you absolutely need to. Stay at least 6 feet away from others while shopping and in lines. 
  • Choosing Safe Social Activities: It is safe to stay socially connected with friends and family who don’t live in your home by calling, using video chat, or staying connected through social media in current times. 
  • At Events and Gatherings: While avoiding crowded places and gatherings altogether is the best option, but if you must visit, then wear a mask and try to maintain at least 6 feet of space between yourself and others at all times. Checking for any instructions or signs such as paint or tape markings on walls or floors may help. 
  • While Working Out: If you plan to visit a park, gym, trail or any other similar facility, ensure you have checked the guidelines. If there are no specific instructions, you can maintain at least 6 feet distance from other people around. Avoid wearing masks while exercising. 

Social distancing should be practiced in combination with other preventive actions to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
